Make A Flash!

I’ve always been envious of my artist friends for their ability to create something tangible, and with their hands. I’ve been trying to come up with different ways to create art that is more akin to ceramics, painting, sketches, etc. – but with my words. Yes, books of poetry and short stories are common, and many would say the same thing. But, they don’t feel the same. I can’t tell you exactly what I was searching for, but I knew I’d know immediately. I’m a ‘trust my gut’ kind of gal.

So, what is it that I’m looking for? A series – similar to a photo series. A “tangible” quality – physical art. An overarching idea or theme but plenty of room for deviations. The ability for anyone to “commission” a piece – not in a money sense, but personal.

Long story short, I’ve been working on a flash fiction/non-fiction photo series called Make A Flash! A few months ago I solicited (non-gross, obviously) photos from Craigslist. I wanted the picture that made the person happiest and most-confident.

Initially I intended this to be a flash fiction and photo series, but I quickly realized I can’t commit to just fiction. Maybe it’s my selfishness or lack of experience pushing through, but I’m struggling to keep myself out of these pieces. I think that’s okay, though.

My Process:

  1. I grab a photo at random and do not look until it’s time to write.
  2. I allow myself a few minutes to brainstorm, take notes.
  3. Then I just write. I may write as the person in the photo or as a springboard for whatever comes.

I’m always open to constructive criticism and do want to know what you think. I am passionate about innovation and new ways to do old/common things – like writing.

Thanks for your time and I hope you enjoy!
